I had the role of FX TD to create the giant plume of smoke and rocket trail as the space shuttle launches in the first 3 shots of this cinematic for Call of Duty Ghosts: Extinction. The simulation was based on reference footage from various NASA shuttle launches. The simulation took over a day to simulate and used up Terabytes of space. I also rendered the elements and set up a composting workflow to use various passes from the render to influence the final look and art direct it as needed. In addition to the volumetric simulations I used a crowd / flocking tool to simulate the flying monsters that were attempting to attack the shuttle, then simulate them falling after an EMP type blast takes them out.
